My contribution to @wavescapesa Festival’s Artboard exhibition (9th March, 2022).
This artwork is a homage to the beauty of the ocean. The colours and shapes are loosely inspired by adventures to the Great Barrier Reef, which I was lucky enough to visit a couple of times growing up in Australia. As vibrant as it was, even then (some fifteen years ago) we were being schooled about the impact of rising sea temperatures, coral bleaching, and overall habitat destruction of one of the most beautiful places in the world. Since moving to South Africa I’ve continued to enjoy the ocean in all the fun ways. I’ve been lucky enough to kayak a few times surrounded by a pod of dolphins, but then look closely at the water see and all the micro plastic they’re swimming in.
At the time of working on this piece, I made the choice to highlight beauty instead destruction, though both are two sides of the same coin when it comes to saving our oceans. Sometimes all the destruction makes me too damn sad.
